What Is UPSC Exam Based On?

UPSC IAS Exam Pattern 2025

The UPSC CSE has three rounds:

  1. Prelims: This is the first round, serving as a screening test.

  2. Mains: The second round consists of written exams.

  3. Interview: A personal interview to assess the candidate's personality and suitability for civil service.

UPSC IAS Exam Pattern for Prelims

The Prelims round consists of two papers:

  • GS Paper 1: Evaluates a candidate's understanding of subjects like History, Geography, and Polity.

  • Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) or GS Paper 2: Assesses logical reasoning and analytical skills.

Both papers include objective-based questions and are conducted in offline mode on the same day. GS Paper 1 has 100 questions, while CSAT has 80 questions, each carrying a weightage of 200 marks. There is negative marking for incorrect answers.

UPSC IAS Exam Pattern for Mains

The Mains exam comprises nine subjective papers:

  • 2 Language Papers: Paper A (Compulsory Indian Language) and Paper B (English), which are qualifying in nature.

  • 1 Essay Paper: To test the ability to articulate thoughts in a clear and concise manner.

  • 4 General Studies (GS) Papers: Covering a range of subjects.

  • 2 Optional Papers: Candidates can choose one subject from a list of 26 optional subjects.

The 2 Language Papers are qualifying in nature, each carrying 300 marks. The 4 GS Papers, 2 Optional Papers, and 1 Essay paper carry 250 marks each. The total marks for the Mains exam are 1750. There is no negative marking in the Mains exam.

The interview round is a personal assessment conducted by a panel of unbiased experts. The panel looks for qualities such as clear thinking, ethical integrity, and a balanced mindset. The interview round has a maximum mark of 275. The final merit list considers the marks of the Mains exam and the interview, totaling 2025 marks.

UPSC IAS Syllabus 2025

The UPSC CSE syllabus covers a wide range of subjects. It is essential to be familiar with all the topics and sub-topics.

  • UPSC Prelims: Consists of GS Paper 1 and CSAT. The GS Paper includes subjects like Polity, History, Geography, Economy, and Science & Tech. The CSAT paper includes questions from English Comprehension, Reasoning, and Quantitative Aptitude.
